Description
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric condition influenced by genetic, neurochemical, and environmental factors. This mini-course explores advances in BD research, including neurochemical dysfunctions (e.g., inflammation, oxidative stress) and neuroimaging findings, such as hippocampal volume changes linked to lithium treatment. Environmental factors, including seasonal light exposure and childhood trauma, are examined for their impact on BD onset and progression. The course also highlights predominant polarity (PP) as a critical clinical specifier, guiding personalised treatments and improving outcomes. By integrating biomarkers and clinical data, this course aims to enhance diagnosis, optimise care, and address comorbidities in BD management.
This mini-course is based on the Educational Update Session presented at the ECNP Congress in Milan, 21-24 September 2024, making this highly regarded session accessible on-demand for everyone with a myECNP account.
Learning objectives
- Understand the neurobiological and environmental factors in BD.
- Evaluate neuroimaging and treatment insights for BD.
- Apply the concept of Predominant Polarity in clinical practice.
Audience
Clinicians, researchers, and mental health professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of bipolar disorder. It is particularly relevant for psychiatrists, psychologists, and advanced trainees aiming to apply the latest insights in neurobiology, neuroimaging, and treatment strategies, including the concept of predominant polarity, to improve patient care and outcomes.
Course format
The mini-course series are based on the Educational Update Sessions presented at the ECNP Congress in Milan, 21-24 September 2024. They consist of two 30-minute lectures, incorporating interactive knowledge checks during the lectures.
Course schedule
Lecture 1.1 - An update on the neuropsychobiology of bipolar disorder (Michael Bauer, Germany)
Lecture 1.2 - Predominant polarity and treatment decisions in patients with bipolar disorder (Giovanna Fico, Spain)
