Knowledge and practice in psychiatry is characterized by differing conceptual models of mental disorder and varying treatment approaches in mental health service delivery. These sometimes bring progress in clinical outcomes, but are also criticised from within and outside the field. Strengths, limitations and trends in psychiatric nosology are much debated, and some have asserted that psychiatry is in crisis, advocating for new paradigms in diagnosis and treatment.
